FUJIYOSHIDA, Yamanashi Prefecture--Clear skies hot on the heels of a freak snowfall had camera buffs and sightseers flocking to a park here March 15 to grab a magnificent shot of a pagoda with Mount Fuji in the background.

“I’m so lucky to see snowy scenery like this on my trip,” said Shen Zhijie, 26, who was visiting from Shanghai with her boyfriend.

The cenotaph-pagoda in Arakurayama Sengen Park was crested with white as the area north of Mount Fuji had experienced a sudden snowfall of up to 20 centimeters the day before.

Expecting an influx of tourists wanting to catch the splendid view, seven shovel-wielding city employees started working at 8 a.m. to clear a path through the snow up the 400 steps to the pagoda.

“It’d be terrible if someone slipped and fell at a popular tourist spot like this,” said Yasushi Shimura of the Fujiyoshida city government’s road and park department. “When the cherry blossoms bloom in a month or so, this place will be bustling with even more people.”
