Richmond Marina adds hip new Vietnamese dining spot

Richmond foodies might want to mark their calendars for April 10, when the brand-new Anh Vietnamese Kitchen is set to spring into action.


Neighboring the popular Salute E Vita Ristorante on the waterfront on Esplanade Drive, the snazzy new dining venue is a labor of love for husband-and-wife co-owners Gio Gelera and Candice Nguyen.
“We’re going to be offering authentic flavors with real flair, plus cool cocktails and a fabulous wine list—right by the bay,” Gelera told the Standard. “And we’ve handpicked a great staff as well.”


Nguyen was born in Vietnam and left the country by boat as a refugee amid political unrest in 1983. The restaurant is named for her mother Anh, an experienced chef for decades who will bring her expertise to the enterprise as well. Anh and some of Nguyen’s brothers have operated successful Vietnamese establishments in locales such as Vallejo, Newark and Oakland over the years.


And Nguyen and Gelera are no strangers to the restaurant biz themselves; the couple opened the fun and funky Bubbaloo Café in early 2015 at 1402 Marina Way South.


Their current plan for the new Anh Vietnamese Kitchen is a sit-down restaurant with full bar that will be open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

I had lunch there with a friend on Wednesday, and it was great!  I had my first phở ever, and I want more!

Hello Marina Bay Folks! On behalf of Anh Vietnamese Kitchen, I'll be answering some of your questions...

Opening: Yes, we are open now 7 days a week from 11:00am - 9:00pm. We are still soft opening and I have done ZERO advertising in order for us to get a more gradual growth as we continue to try to improve things to better service you. We plan a more Grand Opening, ribbon cutting and all well before end of June. Our phones will be up on Monday, and our website is still a work in progress (www.anhkitchen.com). We also have our Happy Hour from 3:30pm - 6:00pm. During Happy Hour all beers are $5, all well drinks are $5, Our House wine by CA'Momi are $5, and we will have a starters menu at $5 item.

Opening a restaurant while operating another is quite a task. 4 months ago brought on my friend, Nico to be our GM. He has extensive Restaurant background having managed places like Aberge du Soleil, Skates by the bay, and The Grande Cafe (SF). for the past few years he has managed the San Francisco Yacht Club jut before coming on board at Anh. Although his background appears very corporate, he is quite a down to earth person and like us loves dogs (he has 4).

Having such a beautiful location in front of the wonderful SF bay comes at a price so although we wouldn't be the cheapest, we certainly did our best to keep our price point fair. 

Although our Veggie Spring rolls are Vegan, we still need to fill the void for Vegetarians and Vegans alike. We are looking to add more of those items.

Getting Anh open has been a real challenging 2-year affair. Everything from planning, design, and issues have kept us from opening in 2016, so now that we've opened a year late, We truly hope you enjoy Anh!

Anh is named after my Mother-in-law, Anh Le. The restaurant is a tribute to her recipes and the hard work she and her brothers had done over 30 years ago operating Vietnamese restaurants.

TAKE OUT: Yes, you can now order To-Go. if you come by, simply have our bartender take your order.

I had also contacted the BCDC (Bay Conservation and Development Commission) to have 4 or so tables for two line up just outside to accommodate diners with pets! They declined but i'm in the process of appealing their decision and if you feel this would be a great idea place let them know at bcdc.ca.gov
