ONOMICHI, Hiroshima Prefecture--Anime maestro Hayao Miyazaki is now reaching for the sky in the real world.

Studio Ghibli’s founder has overseen the color scheme of an amphibious sightseeing aircraft, which was unveiled to the public here Aug. 10.

The plane has been painted bright red, which gives it a brilliant clashing contrast against the blue sky and the Seto Inland Sea.

Green and white lines evoking Italy’s national flag grace the vertical tail fin and are also painted on the underside of the main wings.

Miyazaki apparently borrowed his ideas from his own Studio Ghibli movie “Porco Rosso,” which features an Italian ex-fighter ace operating a flying boat.

The plane is operated by Setouchi Sea Planes, based in Onomichi. And while Miyazaki oversaw the design, the tourist company’s logo adorning the aircraft’s vertical tail fin was designed by Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki.

The aircraft's unveiling marked the first anniversary of Setouchi Sea Planes’ launch of sightseeing flights. The new plane is one of five owned by the company.

A 50-minute flight costs 32,000 yen ($290) on weekdays and 37,000 yen on holidays and weekends.

Porco Rosso - Official Trailer

When "Porco" - whose face has been transformed into that of a pig by a mysterious spell - infuriates a band of sky pirates with his aerial heroics, the pirates hire Curtis, a comical rival pilot, to "get rid" of him.

On the ground, the two pilots compete over the affections of Gina, a beautiful cabaret singer. But it is in the air, with Fio, a young and talented airplane engineer/designer, where Porco's true battles are waged.

From its Mediterranean Sea settings to its dazzling aerial dogfights of amazing sweep and grace, PORCO ROSSO is an exhilarating ride you'll never forget.
